NBA Detroit fires coach Williams Remaining salary 90 billion won

Director Monty Williams

The Detroit Pistons of the National Basketball Association (NBA) announced on the 20th (Korean time) that they had fired head coach Monty Williams (52, USA).

Detroit is a team that ranked last in the league with 14 wins and 68 losses in the regular season in the 2023-2024 season.

As the team suffered 28 consecutive losses during the season, setting a new NBA record for the most consecutive losses in a single season, it is rather strange that the coach has not been fired yet.

Fans’ attention is focused on the details of Coach Williams’ contract.

This is because Coach Williams signed a huge six-year contract worth a total of $78.5 million with Detroit in June of last year, just a year ago.

ESPN, an American sports media outlet, reported on this day that Detroit and coach Williams had parted ways, saying, “Detroit has $65 million left to give to coach Williams.”

$65 million is equivalent to approximately 90 billion won in Korean currency.

Coach Williams also took command in New Orleans and Phoenix before coming to Detroit, and has a brilliant career, including finishing as runner-up in the championship game in the 2020-2021 season while in Phoenix and winning the Coach of the Year award in the 2021-2022 season.

Detroit is going through a dark period with 94 wins, 290 losses, and a winning percentage of 24.5% over the past five seasons, ranking third in NBA history for the lowest winning percentage in five seasons.

The first place in this category is the Vancouver Grizzlies (currently the Memphis Grizzlies), which recorded 78 wins and 300 losses (20.6% winning rate) from the 1995-1996 season to the 1999-2000 season.

Second place is Vancouver, with 86 wins and 292 losses (22.8% winning rate) from the 1996-1997 season to the 2000-2001 season. 고스톱
