The South Korean men’s and women’s national volleyball teams have had to accept a dismal international record this year.
The women’s team, coached by Cesar Hernandez, left the FIVB Volleyball Nations League (VNL) qualifying rounds from May to July with 12 losses and zero points. It was the second consecutive year they went winless and their 24th straight loss.
They finished sixth out of 14 teams at the Asian Championships in late August/early September. This is the first time the team has failed to reach the quarterfinals in 20 appearances since its inaugural tournament in 1975 until 2019. 48 years in the making
It was their seventh straight defeat at the Paris 2024 Olympic Qualifiers, which concluded in late September. They were the only one of the eight teams in Group C (South Korea-Italy-USA-Germany-Thailand-Colombia-Slovenia-Poland) to go ‘winless’. They finished last in the group with two points. It was the first time in 16 years since the 2008 Beijing Olympics that the team failed to qualify.
At the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games, which concluded in early October, they finished fifth. It was his second gold medal and first in 17 years. Since the 1962 Jakarta Games, South Korea had only finished fifth at the 2006 Doha Games. In Hangzhou, they were disappointed again.
The men’s team, coached by Lim Do-heon, finished third at the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Challenge Cup in July. The goal was to win the title, qualify for the FIVB Challenger Cup, finish at the top of the Challenger Cup and join the 2024 VNL, but they fell short.
At the Asian Championships in August, the team placed fifth. It was another disappointing finish.
At the Hangzhou Asian Games in late September, the team was eliminated before the tournament even started. They were shocked by Pakistan in the quarterfinals. It was 61 years since the 1962 Jakarta Games. A streak of 14 consecutive medals from the 1966 Bangkok Games to the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Games came to an end this year.
The volleyball federation is in the process of rebuilding the men’s and women’s national teams.
