FIGURE HOPEFUL KIM YOO-SUNGMAKES ‘SURPRISE SECOND PLACE’ IN FIRST SHORT OF JUNIOR GRAND PRIX


Figure skating’s “twin” junior national team member Kim Yoo-sung (Pyeongchonjung) finished a “surprise” second in her major international competition debut .Kim scored 35.93 technical elements (TES), 27.11 artistic elements (PCS) and a total of 63.04 points in the women’s single short program at the first round of the 2023 International Ice Skating Union (ISU) Figure Junior Grand Prix in Bangkok, Thailand, on Thursday (Feb. 24) to finish second behind Ami Nakai (67.49 points).Nakai is a Japanese figure hopeful who won bronze at last year’s Junior World Championships, and the gap between the two is 4.45 points. Kim will look to win her first career Junior Grand Prix medal in the free skate on Friday at the same venue. He nailed the first half of his performance. He landed a clean double axel in his first performance, followed by a clean triple flip-triple toeloop combination jump to earn a 1.21 GOE. The first nonjumping task, a flying sit spin, earned a Level 4, the highest difficulty level. The first jump of the second half was disappointing. She received an Attention to Edge, earning a GOE of 0.08 points .She deferred her change foot combination spin to a level 4, her step sequence to a level 3, and her layback spin to a level 4.Kim Yoo-sung is the identical twin brother of Kim Yoo-jae (Pyeongchonjung), who finished fourth at last year’s Junior World Championships .He made a splash at the Korean Junior Grand Prix Trials last month when he landed a clean triple axel over three and a half laps. Han Hee-soo (Sunil Girls’ Middle School), who competed in the same event, finished sixth with 55.29 points.
