The SSG Landers defeated the NC Dinos in a home run duel.
SSG defeated NC 7-4 in a home game of the Shinhan Bank SOL KBO League 2023 at SSG Landers Field in Incheon on Thursday.
NC opened the scoring in the top of the first inning with a run-scoring double by Park Gun-woo.
SSG fought back immediately.
In the bottom of the first, leadoff hitter Choo Shin-soo singled to left, and Choi Ji-hoon followed with a triple to right-center.
Choi Ji-hoon came home on a wild pitch from NC starter Lee Jae-hak to tie the game at 2-2, and then Choi Jung took a Lee Jae-hak fastball over the right field wall for a grand slam solo shot.
Choi added a home run 15 days after the NC game on Sept. 9, giving him 451 career home runs, 16 shy of Doosan Bears manager Lee Seung-yeop’s KBO record for most career home runs (467).
Choi also reached 2,100 career hits (13th in KBO history).
NC tried to change the tone in the first inning with Kang Soo-soo, who switched catchers from Ahn Jung-yeol to Kim Hyung-joon without recording a single out, but the next batter, Choi Ju-hwan, took advantage of Lee Jae-hak’s fastball for a solo shot to right field.
After scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning, SSG added another run in the second inning as Kim Sung-hyun, Choo Shin-soo, and Choi Ji-hoon singled in three consecutive batters, and Choi Ju-hwan scored on a bases-loaded walk to Choi Jung.
One out later in the inning, Han Yoo-seom hit a solo home run to right field to make it 7-2.
Catcher Kim Hyung-jun hit his first and second solo home runs of the season in the fifth and eighth innings to cut the NC lead to 7-4.
It was the first back-to-back home runs of his career. However, they were unable to overcome the early deficit.
SSG starter Kirk McCarty gave up four runs on seven hits in 7 1/3 innings to improve to 8-4, his first win in 63 days since June 22 against the Doosan Bears.
NC Jae-hak Lee suffered his second loss of the season (2-2) after giving up seven runs on nine hits in four innings.
McCarty gave up five runs (one earned) on six hits in five innings at NC on June 10, falling to Lee, who tossed seven innings of two-hit ball.
