‘This time it’s a win’ Hae-ran Hwang shoots 8-under par

For the second straight week, 2023 U.S. Women’s Professional Golf (LPGA) Tour Rookie of the Year Hae Ran Lee is in contention for the title.
Hae-Ran Lee carded an eagle, seven birdies and one bogey for an 8-under 64 in the third round of the tournament at Earl Grey Golf Club (Par 72) in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, on Monday (Sept. 28).
After finishing runner-up in the final round of last week’s Dana Open after a late charge, Haziran enters the fourth round of this week’s event with a 13-under-par 203 total.
If Hae-ran holds the lead on the final day, it will be her second LPGA Tour victory in nearly 10 months after winning the Arkansas Champions on Oct. 2 last year.
Also known as the Canadian Women’s Open, she joins Ko Jin-young (2019), Park Sung-hyun (2017), Yoo So-yeon (2014) and Im Na (2005) on the list of previous South Korean champions.
Six strokes back, Lauren Coglin (USA) carded a 12-under-par 204 for a one-stroke lead over Hae-Ran Lee.
Coglin, who made her LPGA Tour debut in 2018, has yet to win a tournament but is coming off a fourth-place finish at the Evian Championship, where she finished 12th on the season’s money list.
After starting the third round in a tie for second place, Hae-Ran Hae carded five birdies in the first half to move into a tie for the lead with Coglin, who led after rounds one and two.
Coglin also dropped four strokes in the first half to share the lead with Hae-Ran, but proved to be too good for the South Korean.
Hahiran recorded her first bogey of the third round with a three-putt on the 12th (par-4), but Coglin also dropped a shot with a three-putt on the same hole, setting up a tense tug-of-war.
It was on the 13th hole (par-4) that Haziran regained sole possession of the lead. After placing her second shot to 2.5 meters from the hole, Haziran birdied to take a one-stroke lead over Coghlin, who had to settle for par.
On the 14th (par-5), Haziran put her second shot on the green and dropped her eagle putt into the hole to extend her 안전놀이터 lead to two strokes over Coghlin, who birdied.
However, she was disappointed to miss a chance to make a clear run.
At the 15th (par-5), she had an eagle chance but settled for par, and at the 16th (par-4), her birdie putt from two meters skimmed the hole and rolled back.
Haziran made par on the 17th (par-3), but Coghlin birdied the next to close to within one stroke.
After struggling with high winds and firm fairways and greens, the winds died down in the third round and a sprinkling of rain helped the players score well.
Mao Saigo (JPN) carded one eagle and nine birdies for an 11-under 61.
The big-hitting Saigo moved into a tie for third place with Rose Chang (USA) at 8-under-par 208.
Shin Ji-eun (KOR) shaved five strokes off her score and is tied for eighth at 5-under 211.
Hye Jin Choi and Su Bin Joo finished the third round in a tie for 23rd place at 1-under par 215.
